Set of the banks of the Guadalquivir river, Seville is a much loved city by visitors and the Spanish alike. Home to some 700,000 inhabitants, this Andalucian city is renowned as a centre for flamenco music, Sevilianas dancing and bull fighting. Set inland, between Cordoba and the Portuguese border, it has huge appeal to language students of all ages for short and long-term courses.
Seville’s splendour stems from the 16 th century with the discovery of the Americas and the consequential flow of trade and wealth this provided for King Philip II. In addition there are Moorish influences throughout the old city and its architecture, most notably “La Giralda”, the minaret of Seville’s Cathedral (originally a Mosque in the 12 th century). The medieval buildings of the “Barrio Santa Cruz” are truly picturesque with flower filled courtyards and beautiful buildings. The narrow, winding streets were originally designed to keep out the fierce heat of the summer sun.
With a summer temperature that can reach the mid 40 o c’s and a winter temperature that averages 12 o c, Seville bathes its visitors in sunshine for most of the year (in August and September this is not necessarily a blessing).
The attractions of the city are many, fabulous and diverse architecture, from the Royal Palaces to the medieval streets, myriad bars, clubs and restaurants, the famous Bull Ring (bull fights take place from April/September), the spectacular Easter “Semana Santa” celebrations , the “Isla de la Cartuja”, a garden with pavilions used for concerts and theatre productions”. There truly is something to appeal to all tastes and interests. Sevillians live at a fast pace year round and in particular love their night life, from top flamenco clubs to local tapas bars and restaurants.
Local Specialities
Enjoy your spare time visiting the bars and restaurants that specialise in the famous Gazpacho soup, floured fish, fried in olive oil “Pescaito frito” and “Huevos a la Flamenca” fried eggs in tomato sauce with Chorizo sausage. Everyone in Seville enjoys their Tapas, each bar will have its own speciality be it fish, meat or vegetable based, chose from olives, cured ham, snails in sauce or fried fish. The local wines Manzanilla and Montilla have to be tried as does the locally produced “Jerez” (sherry).
