The capital city of Austria and home to 2 million inhabitants, Vienna has something to offer everyone. The narrow streets and monumental baroque squares, serve as a constant reminder of the Imperial Habsburg history of the city. Vienna’s musical tradition draws on world-renowned composers; such as Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. Today that heritage continues with the State Opera, the Vienna Boys Choir and a wealth of classical concerts offered throughout the year.
Yet Vienna has a broader appeal, with plenty of modern music on offer, reflecting the trends of the 21st century. Landmarks such as St Stephen’s Cathedral, the Imperial Palace and of course the Spanish Riding School sit comfortably in a city equally renowned for a love of modern art, innovative theatre and a buzzing student scene. Set on the River Danube, the city offers a superb, and safe public transport system with trains, the underground and tram networks, making the city an easy place for everyone to explore. Vienna has endless appeal, from the cultural haunts of the many museums and theatres, the shopping delights of the old city and department stores on Mariahilfer Strasse, or the night-life offered by the numerous bars, clubs and cafes of the 23 districts.
With the Eastern European cities of Budapest and Prague only 3-4 hours away, there are ample opportunities to explore beyond the Austrian borders. When you wish to escape the city for a few hours we recommend the Vienna woods, only an hour from the city centre. During the summer you can enjoy a full range of water sports at Vienna’s Donauinsel (Danube island), go swimming at Lake Neusiedl and sample local wines in one of the “Heuriger” (local wine taverns on the outskirts of the city). In the winter you can combine your German studies with winter sports in Kitzbuhel, all arranged through the college. A prime example of being able to have your Sachertorte, and eat it!
Local Specialities
Vienna has some superb culinary delights to offer the visitor. Sachertorte, Apfelstrudel, Wiener Schnitzel and well over a dozen ways of drinking the local speciality – coffee, in the coffee houses.
